A farm-loving couple in New Zealand recently found an enormous potato in their lot. The vegetable is so big that it might just be a Guinness World Record holder! Here are all of the details.
It was just another day in the garden for Donna and Colin Craig-Brown. That is until they made a weird discovery. The couple was gardening when they found an unexpected potato amongst their cucumbers! "I got the fork and jabbed into it and pointed it to the ground and holy snap and turtle teeth, what's goin' on here? What is it?" Colin recalled. "I said to Don, 'It's a potato!' And she went, 'No!' I said, 'Yeah, it is!'"

And it wasn't just any regular ol' potato - it was huge. "It's fair to say our veggie garden can sometimes get a bit feral. There are some parts of the garden you need to pack a lunch and advise your next of kin before heading in to," Colin jokingly told the Guardian. Still, the nature-lovers were shocked at the seemingly random potato. "It's a mystery to me," Colin said. "It's one of nature's little pleasant surprises."
"We couldn't believe it," Donna added. "It was just huge." The bumpy surprise weighed a whopping 17.4 pounds, according to its proud parents. The New Zealand residents are waiting to hear back if their potato is the new Guinness World Record holder. Currently, a British potato that weighed about eleven pounds holds the title. "If we have it confirmed, there will be a celebration," Donna shared.
Until then, Donna and Colin have developed a great affection for their potato child. They've named the large vegetable Doug because they dug him up and even took him out for recreational activities. "We put a hat on him. We put him on Facebook, taking him for a walk, giving him some sunshine," Colin said. The proud potato-dad even made a little cart to roll Doug around the land. "It's all a bit of fun. It's amazing what entertains people," he said.
But after some memorable moments with Doug, the starchy guy started to get smelly and moldy. "He was getting a bit pongy," Colin described. So the couple wrapped him in plastic and stored him in the freezer. But Colin has bigger plans for the giant veggie: "I'm thinking since I'm a bit of a hobbyist homebrewer, I'm thinking about a special vodka," he detailed.
