Presidents' Day is a federal holiday celebrated on the third Monday in February. By that calculation, this year, it will be celebrated on Monday, February 20. It was originally established to honor George Washington, the first president of the United States. Today, Presidents' Day is also used to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of all past presidents. Here's everything you need to know about this important holiday.

Presidents' Day, initially conceived to honor the passing of founding father George Washington in 1799, has a fascinating history dating back to 1800. Put forward by Congress as a public holiday meant to reflect and celebrate the life of our nation's first President, the day was celebrated for over 100 years before it transitioned into an official federal holiday. Initially observed on Washington's actual birthday, February 22, it was later shifted to the third Monday of February in 1971 as part of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act. This distinctly American holiday has become synonymous with honoring not just our very first President but all US presidents since then.
